Artist Statement

My experiences with grief drive me to reflect on difficult moments that have and will continue to affect me. My work explores the tangible yet dissolving feeling that forever haunts you. In my paintings, fluid colors bleed and blend into one another creating a visceral visual. As these marks accumulate, layer over layer, they become expansive as a whole. Each painting is intended to be viewed as a moment in time, in which all the paint layers and implied emotions are interconnected.

I paint meditatively with watered-down acrylic paint, lines, and colors blending into each other seamlessly. Painting in this way is therapeutic to me, a way to express my emotions. I work quickly, using a wet-into-wet technique. Starting with a thin wash, the paint layers thicken and opacify over time, much like someone adapting to grief, a feeling that started unexpectedly became heavy. I use analogous colors alongside pops of yellow to symbolize the coexistence of subdued emotions with more visceral feelings. Pathways are made with a printmaking squeegee, scraping past layers of emotion, to create a sense of connectedness and limitlessness. Drips are intentionally placed to imply gravity, a weighted-down feeling.

The pieces are large, often bigger than my body, with edge-to-edge mark-making. The size of this work alludes to the monumentality of my emotions. The process between my paintings are non-linear, imperfect and fragmented, mirroring the movement of grief.

The amount of paintings accumulates in the same nature as grief. Through my fluid mark making I am referencing tears throughout my work. The drips are implied to have a weighted down feeling. My work surrounds this idea of grief haunting you, as it always is lingering.
